Can you upload maps to multiple GPS units?

I have a Garmin Nuvi 265, and I'm looking on eBay for two more for my family. I would like all with the 2011 updated maps. All the reading I have been making statements that I would have to buy three updates for the three Garmin. Could this be true? At $ 70.00 or more for Garmin, that's outrageous. Does anyone know?

Yes, a license map unit. Maps are copyrighted material that it is. You cold call and see if you can get a discount for the three licenses though.
