Do I have to use the handsfree function on the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone?

I have a handsfree kit in my car, I want this for the speaker for GPS (the iPhone speaker is not as good) and the latest GPS chip. My taste for blue car kit uses the car speakers for calls. I read that you have connect it to your phone via bluetooth. So do I have to use the hands free part of the kit to make calls? I did post in the electronics section consumption. Sometimes I think that Yahoo Answers has a mind of it's own.
